The Ferrara Charterhouse holds a unique place among Ferrara's vast range of monuments. It's place where memories of the past, masterpieces of secred art, and traces of the relationship between the city and the community lie enshrined, shrouded in silence, and enveloped in an atmosphere of peaceful meditation.
The Ferrara Charterhouse is an itinerant library of illustrious people and memorable personal stories. It is the resting place for the bodies of people who helped change the course of our society, leaving behind concrete actions and principles of beauty, like historiographers, document curators and archivists.
Also noteworthy is the presence of great artists, writers, painters of international level and very great directors.
Not to mention the men who made this journey possible: Duke Borso d'Este, who wanted to be solemnly entombed whitin the Charterhouse itself, and Ferdinando Canoni, the mind behind the manastery's transformation into the monumental cemetery of today.
During the itinerary you'll have the opportunity to admire magnificent busts and statues, little gems of funeral iconography.
The tour includes the interior of the Church of San Cristoforo alla Certosa, recently restored, a masterpiece by Biagio Rossetti, one of the greatest exponents of Renaissance architecture. Commissioned by Ercole I d'Este in 1498, it appears as a Latin cross, with a single nave and six side chapels, and is one of the most original works of the Renaissance in Ferrara.
