From Monet to Van Gogh to Kandinsky
New Visions on Nature and Modernity
From 27 September 2026 to 8 February 2027, Palazzo dei Diamanti presents an extraordinary journey through the birth of modern art, featuring masterpieces by some of the greatest European artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The exhibition explores the profound transformation that changed the way artists observed and represented the world: from Courbet's Realism to the luminous atmospheres of the Impressionists, and on to the groundbreaking experiments of Van Gogh, Kandinsky and Mondrian. In just a few decades, painting evolved beyond the faithful depiction of reality, giving rise to entirely new artistic languages.
Organised into nine thematic sections, the exhibition focuses on landscapes, cityscapes and everyday life, showing how these subjects became a source of innovation and experimentation for generations of artists.
On display are 120 works, including paintings, drawings and prints, most of them from the prestigious Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, complemented by significant loans from leading public and private collections in Italy. Alongside celebrated European masters such as Monet, Renoir, Degas, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Picasso, Kandinsky and Mondrian, visitors will also discover works by renowned Italian artists including Fattori, Segantini, Boldini, Boccioni, Carrà and Sironi.
The exhibition is organised by Fondazione Ferrara Arte, in collaboration with the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam and the Gallerie d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Ferrara, and curated by Sandra Kisters and Vasilij Gusella.
